Peter Beets & the Henk Meutgeert New Jazz Orchestra is an 18-piece big band in which experiment and improvisation take center stage, injected with a healthy dose of swing. The namesakes – Peter Beets and Henk Meutgeert – continue their decades-long collaboration by creating this platform for the newest generation of young jazz musicians to shine. By keeping their pulse on the country’s top conservatories, the highly experienced coaches Beets and Meutgeert have recruited an all-star lineup.
Today’s jazz scene is full of innovation rooted in jazz tradition, yet a compelling musical narrative is sometimes missing. To this end, much is added by the arrangements of Meutgeert, who has proven himself time and again as a dynamic bandleader and energetic arranger. Additionally, the virtuosic playing of Beets carries the whole orchestra with his refined sense of swing. The musical content of the New Jazz Orchestra focuses on the essential characteristics of jazz: exciting solo as well as ensemble playing, harmonic depth, room for experimentation, and of course a healthy dose of swing.
The decades-long collaboration between Peter Beets and Henk Meutgeert has proved fruitful. This was recognized in 2010 when they both won an Edison for the album “Blues for the Date.” This CD – recorded with the Jazz Orchestra of The Concertgebouw – exclusively contains compositions by Beets and was compiled, arranged and conducted by Meutgeert. The album was featured in DownBeat Magazine’s top 5 in the category “Best Album of the Year 2010.”
